Monday post - Reds problems, USA soccer loss

We're about 24 hours away from week 2 of the Blanchester Summer Softball league. If you don't know about it ... you can find out all about it at www.blansoftball.com. Of course, the weather forecast for tomorrow doesn't look so good. Hopefully we can dodge the spotty storm and get the games in again this week.

Looking at the weather models, we may be stuck in this pattern for the next couple weeks. Brief attempts at 90 degrees will be thwarted by clouds and storms. This could be one of the cooler and wetter Junes in recent memory. Hopefully it bodes well for a cooler summer.

On the radiokor.com site, I have posted links to the FAVC football schedules on the standings page. I still don't have all the SBC or SCOL schedules in yet. Hopefully we'll get those soon and I can get those up on the website.

On the national sports front, the Reds come limping home after being swept by the Kansas City Royals. The fact of the matter is this: As constructed, this is a .500 team (plus or minus 5 wins). So it is not terribly surprising that they've fallen back to .500. It wouldn't surprise me if they went on a winning streak now. They'll be good in stretches and bad in others. Until some of the up-and-coming young talent develops, the Reds are who we thought they would be.

And while the offense has been in the toilet lately, the pitching staff continues to keep this team in games. It is certainly a welcome sight in Cincinnati to see strong efforts coming out of the rotation. Hopefully, once the offense crawls out of the hole it is currently in, the pitching staff doesn't take their place in the hole.

Just finished watching the US soccer team's first game in the Confederations Cup. Not surprising that they lost 3-1 to defending World Champions Italy. It was disappointing to have the game changed in the 33rd minute when Ricardo Clark was sent off for a questionable late tackle. While it was questionable, it shouldn't have been an ejectable offense. Poor officiating, which left Sam's Army 10 on 11 for the final 57 minutes of the game. While Landon Donavan PK goal late in the first half gave the US a 1-0 halftime lead, it was only a matter of time before Italy would use its man-up advantage (and poor US clearing attempts) to grab the win. Up next, Brazil, who was lucky to get a Kaka PK goal of their own in stoppage time to escape with a 4-3 win over Egypt. It will be a must-win for the US, if they have any hopes to advance out of this tournament's "Group of Death."

While the Stanley Cup playoffs didn't go like I had hoped (OK, I had no hopes of Columbus beating Detroit in the opening round, but one win would have been nice), it was a thrilling seven-game finals with Pittsburgh winning its third Stanley Cup with a 2-1 win over the Wings. The bigger winner was NBC, who drew one of the largest NHL audiences in a decade, with the thrilling finale. It looks as if the NHL will extend its deal with NBC until the end of the 2010-2011 season, which lines up with Versus' current deal. Only then will we have a chance to finally get the NHL back where it belongs, on ESPN.

And the Lakers win their 15th NBA title. Yawn. Other than a couple of close games, it wasn't a very good finals.
