COLUMBUS – In the state tournament’s return to Ohio State, it was also the return of the MAC.
The Midwest Athletic Conference went a perfect three-for-three on the weekend thanks to Coldwater’s 62-21 win over Canton Central Catholic Saturday night in the Division V title game.
Coldwater (14-1) scored touchdowns on all nine of its drives. The last one left a bad taste in the mouth of neutral observers.
Up 55-21 in the final minute. Coldwater faked a punt, and Kyle McKibben threw a 73-yard touchdown pass to CJ Siebert. It made the score 62-21.
“I’m going to apologize to Can Central for that last play,” said Coldwater head coach Chip Otten. “That’s not a great play, but our guys are conditioned to do that. I apologize to Can Central for that.”
Canton Central head coach Jeff Lindesmith said there were no hard feelings on his part.
“I’ve coached long enough to know that you program people to do certain things,” said Lindesmith. “I said earlier – (Coldwater’s coaches) are classy guys. I wasn’t upset. (Otten) apologized to me, I said ‘don’t worry about it.’
“You’re coaching kids, and you’ve got to program them a certain way. There’s no hard feelings, and trust me, nobody thought much about that. Those are classy guys that do things the right way.”
It was the seventh and final state title game held at Ohio Stadium this weekend. Fellow conference members Minster (Division VI) and Marion Local (Division VII) also won titles on the weekend.
Coldwater’s win is the 28th state championship won by the league. If Versailles’ five state titles earned before joining the MAC are counted, the league can boast 33 champions.
For Coldwater, it is a third straight state title and fifth overall.
“I think it validates the work habits and the work ethic (in the MAC),” said Otten. “I guess the expectations have become so high there. If you win the league, you’re going to be in the playoffs for sure. That high expectation for all of us competing against each other … it makes you want to get better.”
On the very same field where his cousin Bobby was a star in college, Brody Hoying put on a show to bring the curtain down on the weekend.
Hoying accounted for the first five touchdowns of the game. He had touchdown passes of 36 and 10 yards and runs of 24, 11 and 59 yards. At halftime alone, he had 248 combined yards and five scores.
Central Catholic’s 34-point halftime deficit was its biggest deficit of the season. It also triggered the 30-point margin running clock in the second half for the third game of the weekend.
“The backbone of our team has been our defense,” said Lindesmith. “We’ve played some great offenses throughout the course of the year. My hat’s off to them. The quarterback is obviously a great player.
“We’ve played some physical teams. They took it to us. Throughout the course of the year, we’ve controlled the line of scrimmage and we made big plays. The tables turned.”
Hoying finished with 236 yards rushing and four touchdowns to go with 99 yards passing and two touchdowns. Coldwater outgained Central Catholic 486-326.
“We played our best game,” said Otten. “That’s a good team we played. They just went through Ursuline and they went through Bishop Hartley, both are really good teams. We put it together with our best performance.”
For Central Catholic, Jake Boccuti finished 16 of 26 passing for 218 yards and a touchdown. Jimmy Russell was his top target, catching 12 balls for 165 yards and a touchdown.
