The Day After: Little Miami 27, Goshen 0

Welcome to a new feature on the King of Online Radio ... the day after. We'll use this the day after a big high school, college or NFL game to give you my impressions of what I saw the night before. Today, the first of ten regular season installments for Goshen football.

Last night, the Warriors opened their 2008 season with a 27-0 loss at the hands of the Little Miami Panthers. While it is certain that everyone hoped for a better start to the 2008 season, I feel like there are some positives to take from last night's game, and we'll talk about those here.
  • I'm very impressed with the way the Goshen offense moved the ball. Sure, they were shutout on the night, but they were able to run and pass the ball effectively against a solid Little Miami defense. They got solid offensive production from QB Nate Parriman, FB Dustin Lacey, and TBs Tanner Schulte and Jaimie Ashcraft.
  • For a defense starting 10 new starters in 2008, Goshen held their own against the dynamic Little Miami offense. Kyle Cook didn't miss many passes. Other than a couple big runs, Goshen did very well against the rushing attack of Little Miami, which is hard considering they had to think pass first. The two 50+ yard runs - the last by Cook - were certainly back breakers.

In the end it was a game of "ifs" for Goshen. If Goshen is able to tackle the Little Miami receiver at the 20 before he scampered into the endzone, the first quarter goes by scoreless for the Panthers. If Goshen is able to connect on the fourth down reception, Little Miami might not have gotten the 60+ yard run that set up their second touchdown, which in turn wouldn't have set up the ensuing kickoff that was fumbled and recovered by the Panthers.

So even though the Warriors were shutout 27-0, they truly were one or two breaks away from a 14-7 or 21-7 victory on the opening night.

Other thoughts from the opening weekend of HS football:

  • I think we all feared Blanchester was going to struggle against Clinton-Massie. The team played shorthanded and it showed against the Falcons. Of course, despite the fact we broadcast Goshen games now, we here at the KOR all bleed Blanchester blue, and always will. There is no pain like losing the Keg game. Here's hoping the team can put its adversity behind it and recover to have a solid season. It certainly doesn't get any easier next week with a trip to Reading.
  • It was a fantastic opening night for the FAVC Cardinal Division. All six teams were victorious on opening night. After season Little Miami in person ... they could challenge some teams in this division this year. But make no mistake - this division goes through Turpin and Kings. My prediction for 2008: Kings wins it again.
  • The final game of the weekend for our coverage area brought the most lopsided result: Anderson 56, Taft 6. The defending Division II state champions obviously are looking strong again in 2008.
  • Not a good weekend for the SBC National Division. All four teams lose last night. In fact, only Western Brown (28-14 over Hillsboro) and New Richmond (28-0 over Deer Park) brought home victories in the SBC last night.

We didn't get to shoot as many videos as we would like last night at the Goshen-Little Miami game, but we did get a couple videos of the Goshen marching band. Once I figure out how to get them up on the web, we'll have them on the front page. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed us (radio@radiokor.com), tuned in and stopped by the webpage. We want to become the #1 high school football site in the area, and with your help we can do just that.

On that note, we're still looking for people to help write game stories for other area teams. We can't offer to pay much right now, but as our content increases on this site, so will our revenue. So if you'd like to help this site grow, e-mail us at radio@radiokor.com to become a KOR-espondant.

One more note: We've had some requests from our loyal listeners. First, beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday, Friday night's game will be replayed in its entirety. We'll replay it most of the day on Sunday. Also, if Goshen is scheduled to play a team the following Friday it played in 2007, we'll replay last year's game on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. (and replay it a couple times). This won't start this week - Ross and Goshen haven't met since Goshen left the FAVC.

Also, we occasionally do pre and postgame shows, but rarely do we record them. That will change starting next week. We'll record our pre and postgame shows and make them available for download as well.

If anybody else has any more requests of us, please feel free to e-mail us at radio@radiokor.com. Thanks for listening!

There will be very few bright spots for the warriors this year. The score of this particular game could have been much worse. I believe the mindset of this staff is "we're building a team." Which means cashing in the senior and junior classes for the current soph. class. You cannot "teach "or "coach" experience and boy did it show Friday night. The o-line and d-line are too small. The linebackers are decent, but the safety and corners gave up way too many big plays. Special teams coverage was a joke with the exception of the K and P. Too early to tell about the offensive skill posistion players. Let's see what moves or changes come this week against Ross. Good luck boys.
